For years, Anna Gadt has explored the topic of interdisciplinarity in art, considering music the most beautiful form of abstraction. Drawing on her interests in classical, contemporary, jazz, and free music, she invited the young and accomplished classical musicians who make up the Warsaw Cello Quartet to collaborate. Together, the artists pose the question: Is an open dialogue of polarities possible? A dialogue of human existence in the cosmos and nature conducted within the context of contemporary technology? Numerous myths, symbols, rituals, and mystical techniques testify to a longing for a lost paradise, a nostalgia for a paradoxical state in which contradictions exist without clashing, and diversity contributes to unity. We are close as individuals because we share a longing for the unknown and a struggle to unite opposites within ourselves.
The artists, therefore, unite opposites stemming from diverse techniques and genre roots. The original juxtaposition of the cello quartet, derived from classical music, with the voice—the first instrument most fond of improvisation—is intriguing. The musicians draw on poems by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, as well as the novel “Steppenwolf” by Herman Hesse and “I Confess” by Jaume Cabre. “Coincidentia Oppositorum” combines words with abstraction, composition with the unknown, planned from the moment, and silence with sound. The program features original compositions by Anna Gadt, orchestrated by the outstanding young composer Milan Rabija—a laureate of awards including the Leon Janacek International Festival. The cellists are laureates of many prestigious competitions, including: the International Music Competition Musica Insieme in Italy, the 6th International Chamber Music Competition in Bydgoszcz, the National Cello and Double Bass Tournament, and the National Dezyderiusz Danczowski Competition.
