A fantastic collaboration between the trio of Polish guitarist and composer Przemysław Strączek and the icon of European jazz, Andy Sheppard. At the beginning of 2024, the most anticipated album of Strączek’s career to date was released – “Endless Mystery” (premiere March 28, 2024), recorded with the participation of the world-renowned British saxophonist Andy Sheppard (associated with the ECM label).
This is the result of several years of collaboration, which began in 2019 with joint tours and has only now found its fulfillment in the recording studio. The album is dominated by melody, space, intense sounds, and unexpected twists – a manifestation of the musicians’ shared belief in the power of nuance and consciously building tension.
The contrast between intimate, almost intimate passages and more expressive moments makes the album work like a complex artistic narrative, engaging both emotionally and intellectually.
Marek Romański – Jazz Forum, Audio-Video …”This is a beautiful album that stays with us for a long time and brings new experiences each time.”
Andy Sheppard, one of the most important British jazz saxophonists and composers, has received numerous awards from the British Phonographic Academy in the jazz music category. He has performed and recorded with some of the most important artists: the Paul Bley Trio, and the bands of Jimmy Giuffre, Art Farmer, George Russell, Gary Burton, Mike Gibbs, and Gil Evans. In the early 1990s, he collaborated with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, forming, among others, the Lost Chords quartet – one of the most important groups in contemporary jazz. His original quartet emerged with the audacious album “Surrounded By Sea,” released in 2015 by Manfred Eicher on his Munich-based bastion of modern jazz, ECM Records. This recording was hailed not only as perfectly in tune with ECM’s mood and motto (“a sound above silence”), but critics also coined a new term for the saxophonist’s music and compositions: “poignant gentleness.” His album, signed by Bley/Sheppard/Swallow, titled “Life Goes On,” was named the album of the year in 2020 by the influential New York magazine DownBeat.
Przemysław Strączek is a jazz guitarist, composer, producer, and bandleader. A graduate of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, he has received awards including the Special Award of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2013) and the Award of the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship in the field of music (2015). For over two decades, he has consistently pursued his own artistic path, based on dialogue between cultures, styles, and personalities. His musical explorations take place on many levels: in his approach to harmony, aesthetics, sound, and tone color. The sum of these new perspectives is reflected in his recordings—each subsequent album becomes a mosaic composed of various traditions that interact and create a dialogic musical language. Each of his projects – regardless of the form – is characterized by the maturity and clarity of an idea that does not arise from an impulse, but from a long-maturing need: music as an art of encounter, of creating something new from something shared.
