Andy Sheppard is one of the most important British jazz saxophonists and composers, awarded many times by the British Phonographic Academy in the jazz music category. He has performed and recorded with the most important: Paul Bley’s trio, Jimmy Giuffre, Art Farmer, George Russell, Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Mike Gibbs, Gil Evans. In the early 90’s he started working with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow creating, among others The Lost Chords quartet – one of the most important groups in contemporary jazz. His original quartet made a name for himself with the daring album “Surrounded By Sea” made in 2015 by Manfred Eicher in his Munich bastion of modern jazz, ECM Records. This recording was hailed as not only perfectly blending into the mood and motto of ECM (“sound above silence”), but critics also coined a new term for the music and compositions of the saxophonist: “overwhelming gentleness”. www.andysheppard.co.uk
